Art Camp - Day Four - Tie Dye

Its time to tie dye!  Lets get started

First thing first baby brother needs his safety goggles.  Right?

Check - glad that's out of the way.  Okay now on to set up

Open pretty kit and read instructions

add setting tablets to warm water and soak 24 hours.

WHAT?!!!  Oops, I guess I should have read that last night.  Oh well.

 Adding water

Mixing colors

So Fun!  We FINALLY get to touch the dye!

 Picking our colors

 Folding our shirts

 Folding, folding, folding

 Good job Noah!

Putting his shirt in the tie dye container

 Adding colors

 This is serious business.

Once the colors were added, I removed the shirt and placed it in a plastic bag to set over night

 Then It was Eli's turn

 Adding colors

Deep in thought
Once the tie dye sits over night, you take it out and rinse it until the water runs clear.  Then you allow it to air dry.  Here are the finished products.
 Eli's "Folded" shirt

Noah's "folded" shirt

The bulls eye method (you tie it up like this, then dye it, you can also dye it directly in the plastic bag if you wish)

This was so much fun!  Defiantly a several day project.  There are apparently 4 different ways to tie a shirt.  We have done two of the 4 ways so far.  The Folded method & the bulls eye.  The bulls eye gives the pattern that you are used to seeing tie dye in.

This will be something we repeat through the summer for sure!

Windsocks

I am co-assiatant at VBS at our church this year.  YEAH!  So much fun, since I LOVE crafts.  I was not involved with any of the planning BUT I get to help assymble everything when the kiddos come in.  We get about 20-30 kids at a time and there are 4 groups.  This one was fun!

Here is the table all set up for our visitors

We have card stock, (two holes punched in the top), streamers, our bible verse on coloring paper and a pretty cross.

The children colored the coloring sheets while an adult came around and stapled the card stock and the streamers, then the child glued the cross and verses to the wind sock

Beautiful!  Then when it blows in the wind you will remember that God is like the wind, you cant see him but you can see his effects, just like you can see the wind blowing your wind sock!

Art Camp - Day two - Paint Balloons

Well today we were going to do tie dye t-shirts, BUT when I got out all the supplies I saw that it needed about 24 hours of prep work which I had not done.  OOPS.  I started thinking about what to do.  It is art camp week and I needed an idea and I needed it quick.  Then I thought.....I wonder if I could make paint balloons

What the heck - lets give it a shot

I got out some non toxic washable childrens paint, a mustard container (we use these for crafts all the time) and water balloons.

I emptied the paint into the container.  You are going to want a good mix of paint and air in your container.  (dont fill the container full of paint)

Add your balloon and.....

Tilt the container to the side so you can add air.  Do one squeeze of air, pinch off the balloon allowing the container to re-fill with air

re insert paint container in to balloon and fill with paint.

I found the best splats come from the balloons that are half paint half air.

The finished product

Will it work?

SPLAT!
YES!!! IT WORKED!

If you can see his expression he thought it was super cool.

Now that it works, lets make it more cost effective, because really who wants to spend $10 worth of paint in like 2 balloons?

Corn starch paint.

Mix corn startch with water till you get a paint like consentensy, add one squirt of dish soap and add food coloring of choice.

Gotcha!
 Hehe, welcome to the family.

The biggest difference I noticed was the real paint was easier to clean off the fence.  This was so much fun, and it was the most fun when it got on someone and not the paper, even though it made pretty paper splatter art.  If you are worried about mess you can always follow it with a good old fashion water balloon fight.

Now some of you (like my husband) may be worried about clean up.  Here was the damage

a few splats missed the paper on the fence

and a few splats ended up on the ground

I pulled out the trusty water hose and....

what paint fight?

Day one - Mural

Well is week 2 Day one of art camp.  This morning we painted murals

I purchased the mural paper at walmart, its 75 ft in a box.  Very nice and much more convenient than making it out to a teacher supply store

I set up the mural paper, paints, paint brushes & then called the kids.  I choose the shadiest area in the yard (we don't have trees)

After some initial bickering about whoes side was whoms, we got started.

They asked  me to join in

Cleaning brushes and getting more paint.
And then, we needed more paper,

It was HOT, but so fun!
